The herbal ingredients in Memento
Brahmi : Is used as a herbal brain tonic, to rejuvenate the body, as a promoter of memory and as a nerve tonic. It improves memory and helps overcome the negative effects of stress. It is unique in its ability to invigorate mental processes whilst reducing the effects of stress and nervous anxiety. Brahmi induces a sense of calm and peace.
Brahmi has gain world wide fame as a memory booster and mind alertness promoter. It is widely used as antioxidant and in improving the brain cell functions. It helps in relieving nervous congestion and strain from them, as it possesses ushan virya potency; thereby it reduces vata dosha, which is main culprit in causing such problems. Due to presence of tickt rasa, brahmi easily penetrates into the tissues thus giving soothing feel.
Mandukaparni : Acts as a powerful brain food, and is known for its ability to enhance mind power (Medhya Rasayana effect). It supports and improves all aspects of mental functioning, including comprehension (Dhi), memory (Dhriti) and recollection (Smriti). Jatamansi (Musk Root) : Iis found in the Himalayas, Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim. The parts of this plant used for medicinal purposes include Rhizome and Rhizome oil. This herb is well known in Ayurveda for its effectiveness in combating stress and prevents insomnia. It is also considered as the "divine" plant in Ayurveda and is used as an air purifier. It also helps in enhancing memory and treating mental instability. Jatamansi is an effective antispasmodic, digestive stimulant, diuretic, treats nervous disorders, relieves flatulence and is a deobstruent. The other diseases in which the use of Jatamansi medications has been effective are epilepsy, gastric disorders, heart palpitations, jaundice, respiratory diseases, skin diseases, typhoid and seminal debility.
Four parts of Jatamansi and one part each of Cinnamomum tamala, Cubeba officinalis, aniseeds, dry ginger and two parts of sugar can be powdered and used as an effective home remedy for flatulence, colic pains and hysteria.
Jatamansi can be combined with saffron and used as a home remedy for scorpion stings and tubercular adenitis. When used as a tonic, it is effective in general weakness and epilepsy.
Vacha (Acorus calamus) :Is a powerful memory booster and is essential as a 'brain tonic'. It overcomes nervous debility and loss of memory.
Vacha is one of the most renowned herbs used for the rejuvenation of the brain and the nervous system. In Sanskrit, vacha, literally means speaking. Vacha (Botanical – Acorus calamus, Hindi – Bach) grows all over India in areas elevated upto 5.000 feet, in marshes and is also cultivated. It is a strongly aromatic, semi-aquatic perennial herb with a ginger-like stem, which spreads in the ground. This rhizome part of vacha is of medicinal use.
Jeeraka : It is native to Europe and West Asia. It grows wild in Himachal Pradesh and is cultivated in the hills (as summer crop) and in plains of North India (as annual winter crop) and in the hills of South India.
It is an annual or biennial glabrous herb, valued for its aromatic seeds. Roots are fusiform and thick. Stem is slender and the branches are grooved and hollow. The leaves are pinnately- dissected. Leaflets are ovate, cleft into linear, entire or dentate lobes. The flowers are in dense white umbels. In Fruits, the schizocarp are oblong-oval and yellowish brown in colour. The mericarps are aromatic, 4-6 mm long, hard and sharp, mostly curved, light to dark brown and with five prominent ribs. The separated mericarps (commonly called seeds) constitute the commercial caraway. It has a characteristic agreeable odor and an aromatic, somewhat warm and sharp taste.
Shatavari : Has been used in India for thousands of years for its therapeutic and tonic properties. It is an all-round tonic and rejuvenative which can be given to a person with any type, constitution, males or females, youngsters or elders. Indeed, Shatavari is the Universal Rasayana. The name Shatavari is symbolic which means one who possesses one hundred husbands. It has various synonyms like atirasa (very juicy), narayani (from which famous preparation Narayana taila is manufactured), satpadi (possesses hundreds of roots), suksma patra (has tiny leaves etc).
Ashwagandha : Has been used as a sedative, a diuretic, a rejuvenating tonic, an anti-inflammatory agent, aphrodisiac and an immune booster. It is especially beneficial in stress related disorders such as arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, general debility, etc. It has also shown impressive results when used as stimulants for the immune system. It is considered as an adaptogen that stimulates the immune system and improves the memory.
Ashwagandha increases the count of white blood cells and prepares the body to produce antigens against various infections and allergies. Maricha (Pepper) : Is one of the most ancient spice crops cultivated in India and possesses interesting medicinal properties. Externally pepper is used in boils, abscess, leukoderma and scabies. Peeper powder made into a paste and when applied on an inflamed part reduces both the pain and inflammation. It cures night blindness. Its powder is used in tooth ache and its decoction is used in gargling. Ksharasutra prepared with black pepper finds its use in treating fistula. It acts as a stimulant and nervine tonic. It is useful in loss of appetite, liver dysfunction and colic. It stimulates circulatory system.
Shunti : Acts as a digestive tonic and calms stomach upsets and cramps and flatulence when taken with lime juice, stimulates digestion when taken with rock salt and keeps intestinal muscles toned and increase bile flow.
It has warming properties on the upper respiratory tract and used to treat colds and flu.
